Highly in-demand as a composer, Toby has had works commissioned and/or recorded by The King’s Singers (Master of Music, featured on “GOLD”), Voces8 (She Walks in Beauty, featured on “Enchanted Isle”), Scottish Opera, The New World Symphony (Miami, FL), Peterborough Cathedral Choir, and Ensemble Perspectives (FR).

His short scenes Told By An Idiot and In Flagrante, written in collaboration with librettist Emma Jenkins, were commissioned by Scottish Opera and performed across Scotland to critical acclaim as part of their flagship Opera Highlights tours in 2022-23 and 2023-24 respectively. Toby and Emma are currently working on a new satirical opera entitled A Matter of Misconduct!, co-commissioned by Scottish Opera, D’Oyly Carte Opera, and Opera Holland Park, to be presented in 2025.

His music has been heard in major venues across the globe, and broadcast by ClassicFM, BBC Radio3, and various other European media channels. Much of Toby’s music is published by Edition Peters.

Toby has studied composition with Richard Causton, Jeremy Thurlow, Graham Ross, Patrick Brennan and Gavin Wayte, among others, and has won numerous awards for his work, including: first prize in the Flos Carmeli International Composition Competition, Malta; first prize in the inaugural Voces8/VCM Foundation Composition Competition; first prize in the King’s Singers’ A Carol for Christmas Competition; and first prize in the BBC Proms: Inspire Young Composers’ Competition.
